Motor Trend races a Ferrari 458 Italia against a Ducati 1198S

In the annals of Italian automakers, Ferrari is without question at the top of that list having produced some of the world’s fastest, most powerful, and most iconic vehicles known to man. And when it seems that the company has exhausted all of its efforts in their supercar line-up, they come out and release the 458 Italia, an absolute gem of a supercar that’s already considered one of the all-time greats – recalls notwithsanding.

So when Motor Trend wanted to do a little showdown with the 458 Italia, they predictable reached out to its cross-town rival Lamborghini to set a duel between the Maranello stallion against the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera. To everyone’s surprise, Lamborghini declined the invitation, leaving the 458 Italia with no opponent to go toe-to-toe with.

Fortunately, Motor Trend had a back-up plan with another iconic Italian brand with the only caveat being that this brand runs on two wheels. Whereas Lamborghini failed to answer the call, Ducati and it’s 1198S street racer were up for the challenge.

video

For those of you who have been waiting for the facelifted 2011 Volkswagen Passat to be unveiled, you’ll be happy to know that the Paris Motor Show organizers have confirmed the car’s attendance at this year’s event.

Even better, Volkswagen is bringing a sedan and an estate version of the Passat, which should bode even better for those who have been pining to see the re-tooled version of the car for a quite some time now.

While we haven’t seen the new Passat in all its glory, we’re expecting to see a wholesale of changes on the model, including some modifications to the front and rear end, a new hood grille, and redesigned front and tail lights that should give the facelifted Passat a refreshed aesthetic appeal. In addition to the exterior upgrades, the new Passat model will also undergo an interior metamorphosis that includes a newly installed navigation system.

We expect more information from Volkswagen and the new Passat on the days leading up to the Paris Motor Show so until then, sit tight, kids, we’ll send along new developments as soon as they come out.
